Lake Arbutus covers about 835 acres. Along its 9 miles of shoreline, one can find camping facilities, which include numerous fireplaces for picnicking. The lake was formed in the early 1900s, by a dam impoundment on the Black River for a hydroelectric facility. In addition to three campgrounds, the lake has six public boat landings. Lake Arbutus produces walleye and northern pike, muskellunge, crappie and bass. The Black River, feeding the lake and below the dam, has river catfish, as well. There are also several nearby trout streams. Hatfield, once the favorite hunting ground of the Winnebago, is now a friendly resort community. Along with many vacation accommodations, you will find opportunities for swimming, boating, water skiing, pontooning rentals, hiking, dancing, roller skating, and great dining. The Hatfield Area boasts excellent hunting land and trails for snowmobiles and ATVs. For more information, contact the Hatfield Chamber at Route 1, Merrillan, WI 54754, or call 715-333-5910.
