City of Thorp
In 1870 Thorp was a land of timber; the abundant pines and hardwoods were the base of the areas first industries. Farms sprang up on the fertile land, then schools, saloons, general stores, and churches. Within 10 years there was a thriving community. In the early 1900's, dairying was well established and cheese makers came to the area.
Traveling the Yellowstone Trail in the Thorp area you will find excellent food, antique and gift shops, Mennonite and Amish markets, and wayside produce sales. Wonderful restaurants you will give you a "taste" of Northern color and hospitality. Fishing, swimming, camping, boating and picnicking are located close-by at Rock Dam, Mead Lake, Miller Dam, Lake Holcombe, and the Black River.
The Thorp Area has a growing population of Mennonite, Amish and Pennsylvania Dutch families. The Thorp Area Historical Museum located at the former St. Hedwig's Church displays history, genealogies, and artifacts of the local area.
The City of Thorp currently has 7 community parks which contain activities for all. They include a beautiful Library facility; new outdoor swimming pool; ice-skating rink; volleyball, softball, basketball, tennis, and basketball courts; playground areas; a Veteran's Memorial; and a nature trail through the woods.
